So few weekends pass without a farm murder

The latest South African farmer to dies was Koos van Staden was shot through the door of his bedroom on Saturday morning while he was trying to prevent his assailants from entering the room whilst his wife went for a gun.

Van Staden, a vegetable farmer in the Kleinfontein district, was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital. His wife was unhurt.

One of the couple's dogs had been poisoned, but the second survived. Nothing was stolen from the house and no arrests had been made.

2010-04-12 Johannesburg - Two men appeared in the Brits Magistrate's Court for the murder of a 60-year-old Kleinfontein farmer, the North West public safety department said on Monday.

John Silver Mapea, 36, and Robert Mike Kgapolo, 30, were arrested in Mamelodi and Atteridgeville in Pretoria over the weekend and appeared briefly in court, spokesperson Lesiba Kgwele said.

Their case was postponed to April 21 for a formal bail application.

Vegetable farmer Koos van Staden was shot through his bedroom door while trying to prevent his attackers from entering his bedroom at around midnight on March 20.

Kgwele said Van Staden was allegedly shot moments after he shouted for his wife to get his gun. The couple was woken up by an alarm.

Van Staden was declared dead on the scene
