Farm attack victim dead, wife fighting for her life

Johan van Rensburg, 77, who was killed in a farm attack in Limpopo, is pictured with his son Hanno and his grandson, also Hanno. (Beeld)

Johannesburg - A 65-year-old woman who was shot three times in a farm attack in which her husband was killed, is fighting for her life in a Polokwane hospital.

Beeld reported that doctors said Gloudien van Rensburg would probably be paralysed if she survived.

She was shot as she lay sleeping next to her husband, Johan van Rensburg, 77, on their game farm Cosmopolite near the Botswana border.

Her husband was shot dead by the four men who cut the electric fence and bent back burglar bars in the bathroom to get into the house.

The couple were attacked early on Wednesday morning.  American tourists, who had come to hunt on the farm, were woken up by the shots and raised the alarm.

The Americans were apparently too shocked to talk to reporters.

Firearms were stolen from the house but the couple’s cellphones had not been taken.

They celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary in January.

Blood Stained Nation

Teen age Keith Lewis, attacked together with
his 90 year old grandmother in Zululand

The bloodshed continues in South Africa and the last fortnight has been no different. As is so often the case it is the weak, the old and the very young who are its victims. Like all brutes who run when confronted by someone who can fight the sadistic killers of South Africa revel in the brutalisation of those less able to defend themselves.

The latest farm murder was particularly savage as the following report from South Africa's News 24 confirms:

Grisly farm murder scene 'indescribable'

Pretoria - The son and the sister of a man who was gruesomely stabbed to death and assaulted with a shovel along with his girlfriend have described how the couple's bloody bodies were found.

Deon van Staden, 51, and Babs Strecker, 73, were murdered on Friday evening on their smallholding in Madikwe Village in Bethanie, North West, by someone who presumably knew them.

"The shovel still lay close by," said Mabel du Plessis, 61, from Silverton, Pretoria, on Wednesday.

Du Plessis said her brother, who serviced engineering machines, was still sitting in his fallen chair on the kitchen floor when he was found.

"He was full of knife wounds and he was stabbed with a shovel at the back of his head and on his body.

"It looked like Babs tried to run to the bedroom because her feet were still lying in the kitchen doorway and she was also stabbed numerous times and hit on the back of the head with a shovel," said Du Plessis.

A man who came to deliver wooden poles to her brother found their bodies.

Deaan van Staden, 30, who arrived on the scene shortly after the police, said his father and Strecker were busy playing a board game when they were attacked.

"What I saw, was indescribable. My father just sat in the chair on the ground.

"I don't know anymore, I don't know anymore," he said softly.

Grandmother survives brutal attack

90 year old Vivienne Tillett attended by a doctor

Two men entered a Mtubatuba home and went on a spree of wanton violence, attacking 90 year-old granny Vivien Tillett and grandson Keith Lewis.

Minutes after leaving his house in Mtubatuba on Thursday night, Keith Lewis’ family was brutally attacked. His 90 year-old mother, Vivien Tillett, and son Keith Jnr, were both severely beaten by unknown attackers. Just after 8:30pm, Lewis left his family locked inside the house when he went to a garage up the road. Two male intruders broke the locked gate, entered the house and attacked Keith with sticks. A shot was fired, which grazed his face and then the blows started to rain down on him while the young man was trying to defend himself. Knowing his fragile grandmother was in her room, Keith fought back with everything he had. One of the intruders hissed at Lewis that they were going to rape his grandmother and then kill her.

Keith escaped and ran for help, hoping the two men would follow him and leave his grandmother alone. He ran outside up the dirt road towards town and waved down a police vehicle. Horror awaited father and son as they got home. Lewis Snr’s elderly mother had been dragged from her bed into the backyard. Beaten over the head, ribs broken and arm sprained, Tillett was lying helplessly in a puddle of blood in the dark, waiting for her family to return. The perpetrators were nowhere to be found. Doctor Jorgenson and helpful neighbours Peter and Alan Harrison spent the whole night with the family. No arrests have yet been made.

Deafened by the Vuvuzelas

Censor bugbear reports Saturday, 30 October 2010:

Armed attacks against rural whites peaked during WC2010

Armed attacks and murders of ‘rural whites’ in southern Africa between Jan 2010 to Oct 30 2010 -- peaked during World Cup 2010

Oct 30 2010 – According to the two graphs from http://www.farmitracker.com, the number of armed attacks targeting ‘white rural residents’-- 96% of those reported were Afrikaans-speakers -- showed a dramatic peak during and after the FIFA World Cup 2010 football tournaments in South Africa.

Over the past ten months there were 216 attacks against whites in cities; 535 against white smallholders, farmers …

The first graph shows the 216 logged attacks in towns and cities, increased during the WC2010 when the ANC-regime stopped publishing such reports).

  • It showed a total of 216 attacks logged against urban whites from Jan 2010 to Oct 30 2010, peaking in August with 8 on one day and now levelling off to three attacks a day.
  • The second graph shows details of the more than 535 armed attacks targetting ‘whites’ on farms and smallholdings.
The highest level of city-attacks– eight on one day – occurred in August 2010 – just after the WC2010 had ended and during the internet campaign of several 'black-racist’ groups such as COSAS and Blackwash urging blacks in townships to ethnically-cleanse all the white families.

More South African genocide

I am sad to report another series of attacks on white South African farmers, two of whicg were fatal so far this month bringing the total number of white farmers killed since the end of Apartheid to 3117.

Farmers wife dies following attack

Three Jack Russell dogs belonging to Chrissie Harmzen, 70, climbed on top of her and guarded her after she was so severely assaulted on a farm outside Burgersfort in Limpopo on Friday morning that she died later that day of her injuries.

Johan Harmzen, 72, told how the dogs wouldn’t let anyone near his injured wife. “They were very attached to her.” he said. The couple has five Jack Russells.

Mrs. Harmzen was attacked and assaulted barely five steps from the back door of the house she and her husband rent on the farm, Dresden. They have been living on the farm for the past ten years.

“She was beaten so hard that her lungs burst,” said her husband. She was also repeatedly beaten in the face and hit over the head with an unknown object. Harmzen died of her injuries in the Midmed hospital in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.

The couple had been married for 50 years and three months.“We were a part of each other,” said Mr. Harmzen.

Only Mrs. Harmzen’s cellphone, the back door keys and the security company’s panic button were stolen. Nothing was taken from the house.

Post Script - A tale of two Couples

Readers in the UK will be aware of the fact that the headlines here last week were full of reports about the "British" couple, Gul and Begum Wazir, who were murdered in Pakistan in what was variously described as an honour killing or a dispute over a marriage. However, to my knowlege there was significantly less mention of the British couple Christopher and Jennifer Early, who were murdered in South Africa , following what was described as a "robbery", I wonder what it could have been that made the one "British" couple so much more news worthy than the other.

Further Farm attacks

I have been notified of a further farm killing, which occurred the day after the two July 4th killings I reported earlier this week. Frail 61-year-old smallholder Neels Jansen, who was recovering from recent surgery, was shot dead by intruders when tied up next to his wife at the Roodia, Roodepoort smallholdings outside Vanderbijlpark in the early hours of Monday July 5th.

Due to poor hearing Mrs. Jansen did not hear the shot which killed her husband, and it was some minutes before she realised that the man lying next to her was dead.

News report

Rudolph Tereblanche

Meanwhile a Pretoria man has spoken for the first time about how a group of armed robbers shot him in the neck, leaving him paralysed.

Rudolph Terblanche, 47, said he fell flat on his face, unable to move, after being shot. All he could hear were screams, pleading and gunshots.

Terblanche was paralysed in the attack, which happened about a month ago at his house on a smallholding in Willowbray, east of Pretoria.

Friend shot dead

He only found out later that, as I reported back in June, his friend, Gerhard van Jaarsveld, 48, was shot dead and that his partner, Elrene Jones, 40, was shot in the shoulder and lower leg.

The lull before the storm?

There seems to have been a significant lull in the number of farm attacks whilst the world's cameras are focused on South Africa, it is now over three weeks since I have been notified of a fatal attack, and there have only been a limited number of non-fatal attacks, I do not recall such a long period elapsing between deaths in the last couple of years.

As, prior to the world cup, there was on average two killings a week, some may find this suspicious, and feel it could suggest that there is political direction behind the carnage.

This suspicion may be strengthened by the fact that a number of black South African policemen are currently in custody accused of involvement in farm attacks.

Abraham Sesing and Hendrik Eksteen acted to save their employer

In the latest incident a 36 year old black South African policeman has been arrested and accused of driving the get away car in an attempted farm attack in the early hours of Sunday morning, that attack targeted disabled 80 year old farmer Toby Van den Heever and was thwarted by two of his employees one black and one white (pictured above) who confronted four armed men attempting to tear down the security gate of the homestead's kitchen door.

This brings me to another issue which I have hesitated about posting, as I do not wish to cause undue alarm, however, I think it is important to report what I am hearing. There are rumours that an outbreak of racial violence is planned for after the world cup, commencing around the 12t of July. Censor Bugbear has reported on a series of xenophobic threats here and here, this mostly relates to the threats of targeted violence by South African blacks against black immigrants, similar to those which happened in 2008, however, I have also heard that threats have been made against whites as well (if anyone knows more about this please let me know).

There may be nothing to these rumours, it will not be the first time that such such stories have circulated. However, given that there will almost certainly be a lot of resentment following the lack of success by African teams in the tournament, and the growing likelihood that a predominantly white team will win, I would strongly recommend that those living in South Africa continue to take great care of their safety and that of their loved ones.

South African cop held for attempted farm murder

A female police constable from the South African Police Crime Prevention Unit has been arrested for attempted murder – a suspect in a foiled farm attack carried out 333km from her duty station. In addition an ex-cop whose vehicle she was driving, also is sought as a suspect.

The allegedly targeted farmer apparently heard gunshots on his premises and saw three people entering through the gate gunshot was fired at him, in response he drew his own firearm and shot back.

The suspects fled on foot.

The officer was later apprehended with what is described as "incriminating evidence" in the back of a white truck belonging to a retired policeman

Two families survive farm attacks over the weekend

The number of attacks against white farmers in south Africa are unquestionably on the increase, thankfully not all end in fatalities, despite the terrifying experience of the victims, and the clearly murderous intent on the part of the attackers.

I have posted links to two such attacks, which occurred over the weekend, at South of the Zambezi.

In the first attack on Saturday would be killers attempted to burn a mother and her children alive in their own home after sealing the doors with wire.

In the second attack on Sunday a farmer was shot and stabbed by attackers when he opened his kitchen door.

In both incidents the violence itself appears to have been the motive of the attack

Yet another farm attack

A 50-year-old man is in a serious condition after he was allegedly attacked on his farm near Ventersdorp on Sunday morning.

When paramedics, who had been called shortly after 05:00, arrived on the farm they found the elderly man with multiple stab wounds to his leg and a serious fracture of his upper leg, together with heavy bruising.

The man apparently heard a noise outside his house when his dogs started barking. When he tried to investigate, a group of unknown suspects overpowered him and assaulted him, whilst his wife and family hid.

Thankfully this attack was not fatal, the victim was airlifted to a Johannesburg Hospital where he is in a serious but stable condition.

Police are investigating.

“Die white man! Viva Malema!”

"Die white man! Viva Malema!”

Shouted 4 armed robbers whilst attacking a white family during a farm attack East of Pretoria at the weekend.

39 year old Capt. Leon Johan Koekemoer, his wife, Annelie (37), and their 3 children together with their lodger were the victims of a terrifying home invasion when intruders broke in through a window in the lounge after forcing open the burglar bars.

The intruders fled when the family fought back shooting one of the number dead

The attack which the police are investigating as attempted murder, follows a well publicised incident where ANC youth leader Julius Malema, defied a court order and sang the ANC battle song “kill the Boer”
