Vanishing American

The Vanishing American blog includes an interesting post entitled Remaking 'Womanhood' which explores the same themes I did last weekend with a post entitled "When the English Rose became the Common Ragwort".

Generously mentioning my post, Vanishing American goes on to say:

We in America might note the same phenomenon at work in our popular culture. We have only to watch the ''news'' channels, especially Fox News, or read the popular tabloid magazines to notice the ubiquitous images of women like Paris Hilton, or the late Anna Nicole Smith, or Britney Spears. The young people have "Hannah Montana"/Miley Cyrus, around whom there was a recent controversy over a photographic spread which sexualized her beyond what should be appropriate for her age and her audience.

Then there is the superannuated 'Material Girl', Madonna, who is one of the early examples of the pornification of the female image over the last couple of decades. ......

Sarah, I was brought up in a world where women were treated as ladies and usually they acted like them regardless of personal wealth.

I am afraid today's young ladies leave a lot to be desired.
